I think writing is fun, and it’s such an important way to get my message across. I get persistent feedback that I’m good at it and should be doing more of it.

But productivity is a continuous struggle though, I tend to get stuck on the step between outline and editing and I’m always over-researching. I’m unsure whether that’s just lack of skill, or perfectionism or neurodiversity. I just can’t wrap my head around the HOW even though I have completed plenty of writing and academic research projects.

Would it be ok if I covered this for a Feminist Advice Friday? I have a ton of thoughts.

Please do! I also realize that there’s quite a bit between outline and editing 🤪, those are just the parts I do like.

I love this! I had a similar trajectory as you! I also started almost by accident with a content mill 10+ years ago, and then went out on my own in the first year. I specialize in writing blogs for Personal Injury lawyers. It's a great niche, because they have big advertising budgets! I work less now that I'm a mom, but it sure is good to have my own income stream! (small as it may be with my limited time).

Freelance writing enabled me to relocate and move 100miles away from my STBX when his affair came to light.

In a weird coincidence, I landed my biggest client on “discovery day”. It’s awesome what the universe sends your way when you really need it.

I’m forever grateful to my clients for helping me find my passion and my peace. And, of course, for funding my solo life and reinvention!

This was a great read. Writing has always been my long-term career goal, but as a single mother with an MA in philosophy facing a bum job market when I graduated, I took a job with the family business - fishing crab and shrimp offshore of eastern Canada - instead of pursuing my academic goals. Now I’m newly retired from fishing at 42 and stepping into the administrative side of the business, and I’m ready to start writing full time, but it’s intimidating thinking of building a writing career basically from scratch. I don’t know anything about freelancing, and the internet was a different world back when I was still in school. This is the first thing I’ve read that makes me feel like it’s an attainable goal without having to pump out a stack of novels first ❤️

Definitely don't pump out a stack of novels! That's the least profitable way to be a writer. You can do it!
